Lady Cougars - State Champions

Garden City residents will come together to celebrate the Garden City High School Cougars 2008 State Championship in softball. The first ever MHSAA State Championship in the 57 year history of Garden City High School. The rally will be held in the Commons on the corner of Ford and Middlebelt on Monday, July 14 at 6:30pm. The public is encouraged to attend. Scheduled to be a part of the program is Cougar head coach Barry Patterson, the players and coaches of this historic team, the Mayor and Council, Garden City’s State Representative Bob Constan, State Senator Glenn Anderson and County Commissioner Phil Cavanaugh.

The rally is being put together by the voice of the Cougars and Garden City resident Dan York and Jackie Schatz from the Downtown Development Association.

The GC Cougar softball team capped of their first ever State Championship with a 2-1 14 inning win over Alpena at the MHSAA State Championships in Battle Creek in June.

“This is a great opportunity for the community to show how much they appreciate this first ever GC State Champion,” said York who has been the school’s PA announcer since 1978. “I hope we get a great turnout- this should be a really fun event.”

Hot dogs and lemonade are being provided by John Fleming of Fleming Financial and they will be prepared and handed out by the Kiwanis. State Championship T-Shirts will be provided through donations from Boland’s Florist, Orin’s Jewelers, the Santieu Family and Albert’s on the Alley. Special banners commemorating the State Championship will be un-veiled. They will be provided by the DDA and Sign A Rama here in Garden City. More details will be worked out as the event nears.

Please help us spread the word and mark your calendars to attend the celebration, Monday, July 14 at 6:30pm.
